In his book, 'Political Church' Jonathan speaks of 'institutional specificity' - by which he means different institutions have different responsibilities and powers. In other words, some duties/roles are specifically given to some institutions and not to others. In his view, understanding the church and state as separate institutions is a helpful way of considering which powers and responsibilities belong to which and therefore what we should expect from both.
We sat down with Jonathan to chat about some of the questions that naturally arise in this debate. What role should Christianity play in our constitution? Should we seek a 'Christian' nation? Is a secular state a good thing? Where are we as Christians most likely to overstep the mark?
